The Department of Applied Linguistics and Language Studies (ALLS) at Chung Yuan Christian University was established in 1999 and launched its M.A. program in 2005.

The courses provided by these two programs are taught exclusively in English. The undergraduate program focuses on enhancing students' English skills. In addition, the undergraduate program focuses on English language training and subfields in Applied Linguistics (TESOL and Translation/Interpretation.) Additionally, undergraduate students are required to learn a second foreign language (i.e., French, German, Japanese, or Spanish) and pass the 2nd language proficiency test as one of the graduation requirements.

The M.A. program emphasizes students' professional knowledge in the subfields of linguistics, foreign language pedagogy, and/or translation and interpretation in addition to training English language skills.
